Global Waterfront & Rattle N Hum

After dodging Cyclone Debbie and the tail end of yet another lame wet season for the north, the Global Waterfront refurbishment project enters its 15th week of construction.

We are currently at the tail end of the demolition stage which included a completely strip out of the entire existing fit out including multiple suspended slabs on the roof and countless double brick internal walls.  The demolition crew estimate that approximately 300 tonne of rubble and material has been removed from the building which in turn was music to the ears of our structural engineer.

The rebuild entails a full refit of the existing 3 storey building with an additional level of accommodation and cocktail bar being built on the east facing the Cairns Esplanade lagoon.

The scope is a upmarket trendy backpackers to target a new breed of traveller.  Many of the rooms have ensuites and will be fitted with the mod cons to provide a clean and modern fit out.

The project is one of the largest that Paul and Joe have worked on and the management team including experienced site supervisors Bill Kershaw and Nathan Wooldridge, are managing the huge challenge in a systemised, safe and economical balance that has developed a harmonious and productive site.

The programming and scope is demanding up to 50 workers on site each day and safety has been a priority to monitor for this many contractors to care for.  Our safety consultant Jacee Gellard from FNQ Safety has been an excellent and necessary addition to the management team. Her experience and knowledge of the industry has been invaluable in guiding us to a much safer and manageable project.

The project heads towards structural steel phase and room fit out in the next few weeks.  Stay tuned for more updates.
